Selecting an Electric Floor Scrubber: How Large Should Your Machine Be?

Buying an electric floor scrubber is not simply a matter of choosing the largest cleaning width or the machine with the biggest tank.

For commercial and industrial buyers, the better question is:

How much floor do you need to clean, and how quickly does the cleaning need to be completed?

A 500 mm walk-behind scrubber can be highly practical for a supermarket, workshop or medium-sized commercial building, while a 700 mm or larger ride-on machine may be more suitable for a warehouse or manufacturing facility with thousands of square meters of open floor.

The right electric floor scrubber machine should match your actual cleaning route, not just the total size of your building.

Start With Your Actual Cleaning Area

The first specification to check is not the motor power or battery.

It is the floor area that must actually be cleaned.

For example, consider three typical buyers:

Facility Approx. Cleaning Area Practical Requirement
Retail store 2,000–5,000 m² Compact walk-behind machine
Workshop / supermarket 5,000–15,000 m² 500–700 mm scrubber
Warehouse / factory 15,000+ m² Wider or ride-on machine

These figures are only starting points. A 10,000 m² factory with many machines, columns and narrow aisles can require a different machine from a 10,000 m² warehouse with large open aisles.

This is why professional buyers should consider cleaning area + layout + available cleaning time together.

1. Cleaning Width Determines How Many Passes You Need

Cleaning width directly affects how much floor the machine can cover during each pass.

A 500 mm machine cleans a 0.5 m path per pass.

A 700 mm machine cleans a 0.7 m path.

That is a 40% wider cleaning path.

For a large open floor, this difference becomes significant.

Example

Imagine a warehouse with 8,000 m² of cleanable floor.

If the cleaning team has approximately 3 hours available:

8,000 ÷ 3 = 2,667 m²/h

The machine therefore needs to deliver approximately 2,667 m²/h of practical cleaning capacity.

A machine with a wider cleaning path can reduce the number of passes required.

However, published productivity is normally based on ideal operating conditions. Turns, obstacles, overlapping passes, tank filling and operator movement reduce actual output.

Therefore, when comparing an electric floor scrubber machine, leave some operating margin instead of buying a machine that only meets the theoretical number.

2. A 500 mm Scrubber Can Be Enough for Many Commercial Applications

A wider machine is not automatically better.

For supermarkets, workshops, retail stores and medium-sized warehouses, a 500 mm electric floor scrubber can provide a useful balance between productivity and maneuverability.

For example, our VL-X500 walk-behind floor scrubber provides:

  • 500 mm cleaning width
  • Up to 2,500 m²/h cleaning capacity
  • 55 L clean-water tank
  • 65 L recovery tank
  • 3–4 hours working time
  • Approximately 80 kg machine weight

This configuration is suitable when the customer needs professional cleaning but still needs to move through doors, aisles and relatively confined working areas.

Example: 6,000 m² Workshop

Suppose a manufacturing workshop has approximately 6,000 m² of cleanable floor.

The customer wants to clean the facility every day and has approximately 3 hours available.

A 500 mm walk-behind machine with a rated capacity of 2,500 m²/h gives:

6,000 ÷ 2,500 = 2.4 hours

The theoretical calculation indicates that the machine has enough rated capacity for the target route.

The actual cleaning time will depend on equipment, production areas, columns, workers and floor conditions, but the calculation gives the buyer a useful starting point.

3. When Should You Move Up to a 700 mm Electric Floor Scrubber?

A larger machine becomes more attractive when the facility has:

  • Large open floor areas
  • Long cleaning routes
  • Wide aisles
  • Fewer obstacles
  • More available cleaning time pressure
  • A requirement for higher daily productivity

Our VL-X700 provides a 700 mm cleaning width and approximately 4,500 m²/h cleaning capacity, with an 80/100 L clean/recovery tank configuration.

Compared with a 500 mm model, the wider cleaning path is more suitable for customers who want to reduce the number of passes across large open floors.

Example: 12,000 m² Warehouse

Assume a warehouse has 12,000 m² of cleanable floor.

If the cleaning team has 3 hours:

12,000 ÷ 3 = 4,000 m²/h

A machine rated at approximately 2,500 m²/h would not provide much margin for this target.

A 700 mm machine rated around 4,500 m²/h gives the buyer substantially more rated capacity to work with.

This is where choosing a larger commercial floor scrubber can make sense.

4. Ride-On Scrubbers Become More Attractive as the Route Gets Longer

For very large facilities, operator walking distance becomes another factor.

A ride-on electric floor scrubber machine allows the operator to remain seated while covering long routes.

For example, our VL-X500A ride-on model provides:

  • 500 mm cleaning width
  • Approximately 3,600 m²/h
  • 80 L clean-water tank
  • 100 L recovery tank
  • 0–6 km/h travel speed
  • Up to 15% gradeability
  • ≤60 dB
  • Approximately 3–5 hours working time

This type of machine can be particularly useful for warehouses, factories, supermarkets and large commercial facilities where the operator spends several hours cleaning.

5. Tank Capacity Matters as Much as Cleaning Width

A common purchasing mistake is looking only at cleaning width.

A machine may have a wide brush but require frequent water filling or recovery-tank emptying.

That creates downtime.

Our range includes different tank configurations:

Model Cleaning Width Cleaning Capacity Clean Water Recovery Water
VL-X500 500 mm 2,500 m²/h 55 L 65 L
VL-X500A 500 mm 3,600 m²/h 80 L 100 L
VL-X700 700 mm 4,500 m²/h 80 L 100 L
VL-X860 860 mm 4,800 m²/h 120 L 135 L

As the cleaning route becomes larger, increasing tank capacity can help reduce interruptions.

The VL-X860, for example, combines an 860 mm cleaning width with 120/135 L tanks and approximately 4,800 m²/h cleaning capacity.

That configuration is more appropriate for buyers looking for higher-capacity equipment for large industrial or commercial floor areas.

6. Don't Buy a Machine That Is Too Large

There is also a downside to over-sizing.

A very large machine can become inconvenient when the facility has:

  • Narrow doors
  • Small elevators
  • Tight aisles
  • Numerous shelves
  • Columns
  • Crowded production areas
  • Multiple small rooms

For example, a 15,000 m² supermarket may have a large total floor area, but much of that area may be divided into aisles and customer zones.

In this situation, a maneuverable walk-behind machine may be more practical than simply selecting the widest available ride-on scrubber.

The goal is not to buy the biggest machine.

The goal is to buy the machine that can complete the cleaning route efficiently.

7. Quick Electric Floor Scrubber Size Guide

Use this as a starting point when selecting a machine:

Daily Cleaning Requirement Possible Machine
Small commercial areas Compact walk-behind scrubber
3,000–8,000 m² 500 mm walk-behind
8,000–15,000 m² 500–700 mm machine
15,000+ m² Wider walk-behind or ride-on
Large open warehouse 700–860 mm or ride-on configuration

The actual choice should also consider aisle width, floor condition, cleaning frequency, battery runtime and water supply.

Choose the Machine by Your Cleaning Route

If you are buying an electric floor scrubber for a commercial or industrial facility, send us these five details:

  1. Total floor area
  2. Actual daily cleaning area
  3. Available cleaning time
  4. Narrowest aisle or doorway
  5. Floor type

For example:

10,000 m² warehouse + 3-hour cleaning window + concrete floor + 2.5 m aisles

With this information, we can recommend a suitable cleaning width, tank capacity and machine configuration rather than simply quoting the largest model.
